Rose Bud Thorn Testimonials

Oral History Interviews

Taking inspiration from OA’s signature group activity, the Rose-Bud-Thorn testimonial asked narrators to share a quick reflection on their OA  experience. Narrators were asked to spend 5-10 minutes reflecting on a ROSE--a positive experience or memory from their time in OA--a BUD--a positive impact from OA--and a THORN--an experience from OA that may have been difficult, but which helped to develop character and interior life.

Participants who wished to share more about their experiences in OA selected the extended interview option. Over approximately 60-90 minutes, participants met with a trained undergraduate oral historian to delve deeper into the program’s heritages. This option attracted many former and current OA guides, leaders, and staff.

OUtdoor Adventure

The product of a collaborative partnership between OU's Outdoor Adventure Leadership Team and The Listening Project, the Outdoor Adventure Listening Project is a community-centered oral history initiative. OA is a backpacking and leadership development organization at OU, and offers participants a great opportunity to meet other Honors College students, to get involved with Honors activities, and to explore the outdoors. Each year OA leads students in day hikes, weekend camping trips, and picnics. OA meets regularly in the spring to practice outdoor skills. The OA Oral History project engages current and former OA leaders, guides, participants, and staff in the process of preserving their own histories, with the goal of creating a comprehensive account of the OU Outdoor Adventure program and of its heritages.

Narrators had several different ways to create their testimonies with TLP. Scroll down to see the creative interactive outputs and to view the OUtdoor Adventure oral history archive. If you wish to participate as an interviewee, please fill out the "Participate" form.

Narrators' favorite hikes and backcountry campsites were culled from early oral history testimonies. Linked by common OA experiences, the sites on this map combine to create an exciting, interactive history of OA.
